Live webcam showing the osprey nest in Montana, USA. The broadcast is conducted around the clock, but at night the nest is not illuminated so as not to disturb the birds.
The osprey is a bird of prey, common in both hemispheres, the only representative of the skopin family (Pandionidae).
Ospreys are distributed throughout the world, breeding or wintering on every continent except Antarctica.
They nest everywhere where there are safe nesting sites and shallow water areas with an abundance of fish. Nests are usually located 3-5 km from water: swamps, lakes, reservoirs or rivers, but can also be arranged in a good place above the water. Places are chosen such where it is possible to build a large nest, difficult to access for land-based predators – sometimes above water or on a small island. A dead tree, buoy, or other artificial structure may serve as a nest site.
Ospreys that hatch chicks travel up to 14 km from the nest in search of food, while at other times they can fly up to 10 km.
