In Germany, there are a total of more than 500 species of birds – both migratory and living here all year round. The latter are called “local” or “domestic” in Germany. These native birds account for about half of the species found in German forests, gardens, fields, ponds and other landscapes. The most common German domestic bird remains the house sparrow, with 6.7 birds at each observation point. The greatest concern of ornithologists is caused by common greenfinches – 1.17 birds. According to experts, their population in Germany suffers, in particular, due to trichomoniasis, which they become infected with in the summer while searching for food.
